Summer Term 2023

Fruit Kebabs

Yesterday we designed a fruit kebab for ourselves to eat. We had to choose 3 fruits we liked and created a design using this fruit, some of us even chose fruit we hadn’t tried before! We wrote a list of ingredients and the equipment that we would need. Today we had lots of fun making our kebabs, which were extra tasty! We carefully chopped and threaded the fruit on the BBQ skewer.  After we ate them we rated our kebab using smiley faces.

Forest School

What an amazing day we have had today in Year 1! We were very lucky to have a visit from Philip ‘The Skull Man’. He shared his collection of animal skulls ranging from deer to moles. He talked about the features of them and even let us hold them! You wouldn’t believe how heavy a deer’s antlers are. Then we explored the many trees of Portway using our leaf dials to identify them. After this we used our new app on the iPads to name the different plants, leaves and flowers around our school grounds. Maybe they can show you at drop off or pick up?

This week we had a golden ticket of woodland fun in our transition balloon and we were very excited. So we spent the afternoon enjoying a range of activities as a year group. This included making Deadly 60 animals out of clay, den building, played in the mud kitchen, bug hunting and leaf whopping. We even had an exciting sensory station where we walked bare foot over different materials including sand and water.

It was the perfect forest school day to celebrate all of our hard work in year 1. Thank you again to our Forest School leader Miss Birmingham for all of her wonderful planning. Also a big thank you to Mr Preston and Mrs Whitefield.

Scotland Day

It’s been another exciting day in Year 1! As part of our Geography learning we took a plane ride to Scotland! In our imaginations of course! The day started with our flight into Edinburgh. During the journey we shared and learnt facts about our destination and we even had our own plane ticket to show our British Airways cabin crew! Once in Scotland, we took part in a number of activities that helped us learn even more about the wonderful country we were going to. There was tasting of Edinburgh rock, flag colouring and landmark labelling to name a few. Why not have a look at the photos below and see what we got up to for yourselves!

Sports Day

What fantastic weather we had for our school sports day this year! It certainly beats the rain of years past! It was lovely to see all the parents and grown up there to cheer on the children and the children were so excited to see you all too! If you didn’t manage to join us this morning there was a Seaside obstacle course that involved wearing an inflatable, building sand castles and laying in the sun for a while. Not too long though, it was a race after all. Next it was an old favourite; the water relay followed by the bean bag race and finally the excitement rose once again for the egg and spoon race and the sprint race. Needless to say everyone had a great time in the sunshine and we would like to say thank you again for helping us to make this such an amazing morning! To see some of the fun for yourselves, have a peek at the photos below.

Wild Science

We had a visit from some amazing creatures this week! Mary from Wild Science came to Year 1 to show Sir Pent the corn snake, Flick the leopard gecko, Steven the stick insect, Sheldon the tortoise and Dougal and Zebedy the chinchillas. She told us lots of facts about the animals and we had the chance to ask some questions.

Forest School!

What a fantastic time we had on our forest school day Today! The sun was shining the birds were singing and the children were all in good spirits and excited for the day!

We made our very own Titanic floating models using sticks, corks, string and other natural resources from our forest school area. The childen loved testing and improving their models and even if their models sank they weren’t to fussed, as after all so did the real Titanic!

We also had the chance to learn how to tie a knot, make a stretcher using sticks and our jumpers and also to test our balance walking along some very long ropes! Finally the 3rd activity in our rotation gave us the chance to build our own dens, play in the mud kitchen and even dig for worms and other bugs! Have a look at the pictures to see what fun we had.

Petr Horacek

We were incredibly lucky to have one of our favourite author and illustrators Petr Horacek visit Portway today. He wowed us all with his fantastic stories and even taught us how to draw some of his more famous characters. Have a peek below to see your own budding illustrators at work! Enjoy!
