Diversity Statement

On 25 April 2023, the Department for Education (DfE) updated its guidance for 'What Maintained Schools Must Publish Online' to include governors' diversity data. The guidance encourages schools and trusts to collect the diversity data of the governing board and publish it on the school's website. Portway Infant School's Governing Body discussed the matter during their meeting on 25 September 2023 but agreed they did not consider publishing the diversity data would add any value. They also noted that governors are appointed or elected on ability and equity. It was also an area of concern that individuals might be too identifiable in such a small group of people. However, the governing body does consider the diversity of its constituent members during recruitment and always strives to represent the school's community. The Governing Body did think that publishing diversity data would be useful on a county-wide basis where individuals would not be identifiable.

Governor Vacancies

Every school has a board of governors who work in partnership with the school to give children the best start in life.

We're classified as 'outstanding' by Ofsted, became a National Support School in 2017 and we’re consistently over-subscribed, the third most over-subscribed in the county! We believe every child has the right to the highest standard of education and to be literate and numerate are non-negotiable. Our children’s achievements are due to our excellent staff who focus on high quality teaching and learning, enabling them to enjoy today and prepare for tomorrow.

We have vacancies for co-opted governors to join our board to support the school to uphold its ‘outstanding’ status. To be a co-opted governor, you wouldn’t have a connection to the school, religion, or the local authority. Co-opted governors, in the opinion of the governing board, have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

We welcome applications from volunteers from all backgrounds, who are passionate about children's education and are keen and willing to learn. You should also be willing and able to commit time to visit the school to carry out various activities expected of governors. Our school upholds the highest commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our children and, as such, safeguarding checks will be undertaken, including online searches, for anyone who applies to be a governor.

We meet informally when needed, with a full governing board with the school six times a year during term time.
