The Hawk Conservancy
Yesterday we went to a place like a bird world. If you like birds of prey then the Hawk Conservancy is the place for you.
Vultures are birds that feed on carcasses. They are critically endangered but are very important too because they kill the bacteria using their stomach acid. What amazing birds they are! We even got to see them being fed and I saw them fly.
The Wings of Africa Show
Next we watched the Wings of Africa Show. The first bird in the show was a Verraux’s Eagle Owl called Tolkien, the next bird was a vulture and then a secretary bird came along and attacked a rubber snake.
Other birds we saw
Later on we saw some more birds including a barn owl, a northern hawk and a peregrine falcon which could fly up to speeds of 290 km an hour. We also saw a Meerkat, more birds we saw are the Southern boobook owl, the snowy owl and the king vulture.
Valley of the Eagles Show
Last of all we watched the Valley of the Eagles show and saw the peregrine falcon fly. Then we saw vultures fly over our head. Then sadly we left.
I really liked the Hawk Conservancy and I hope you get to visit one day.
Year 2 were fantastic today and they really enjoyed their day exploring the school grounds. After identifying hazards the children made special flags to make everyone aware of the hazard and keep them safe. The children loved going on a nature hunt, creating a natural collage picture and exploring the woodlands. Inside the woodlands they built an owlet's nest, climbed trees, cooked in the mud kitchen and played on the swing. We had a very exciting day and we are sure the children will sleep well tonight!
What a fantastic week we have had! On Tuesday we became Thomas Farynor and baked our own delicious bread rolls. We kneaded the dough and tied it into a special knot. It was very exciting to watch the dough rise. On Wednesday Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service came to Portway. We learned lots about keeping ourselves safe and we even went inside the fire engine. Our favourite part of the day was using the hose to spray a pretend fire. On Thursday we became actors and retold The Great Fire of London with the fantastic Rainbow Theatre. We learned lots about 1666 and had so much fun!
On 27th February some of Year 2 went to Harrow Way to participate in a New Age Kurling competition. The children were fantastic and had lots of fun! They were split into 3 teams and each team played 5 games. All the children displayed excellent sportsmanship and worked well as a team. They had a super aim and were able to reach the target zones. We were delighted to come 1st, 3rd and 4th. Well done to all those children who took part!
Year 2 Concert Report
On Thursday 18th January we went to Southampton Central Hall to see an amazing orchestra. When we got there we saw all of the musicians sitting down and getting their instruments out. My favourite instrument was the violin because they are quick and they are nimble. They played lots of wonderful pieces but my favourite piece was about a lonely drummer who wanted to play a tune and she got to play a tune on a xylophone. Next a magician turned the Conductor's money into fire and then it became a baton. How clever that was! My favourite trick that the Magician did was when he scrunched up a ribbon and it came out of a little boy's sleeve! Then we got to join in with a song called Running Order and it was great. When Running Order had finished it was time to go. I loved the orchestra and I hope I'll come back soon.
On 18th January, Year 2 went to Southampton to listen to an orchestra. What an amazing time we had! I liked all of it but my favourite part was when a magician did magic tricks. Then we were allowed to join in and I almost laughed because I was so warm and fuzzy. I loved the Lonely Drummer because I love the xylophone. I loved all of the orchestra, but mostly the magic tricks. How fun it was! Soon after the concert started, it ended and we had to leave to go back to school.
On Thursday 18th January we went to listen and watch an orchestra in Southampton! We waited patiently for them to start. First they introduced us to the instruments. Then they did a magic trick. The magic trick was pulling a bunny out of a hat. Next we all joined in with singing. I liked the trombone because it was noisy. Finally we went back to school.
Year 2 had a super day dressed as penguins. First we sang a special penguin song and then we created Antarctic calendars by tearing and layering different textured paper. Next we looked carefully at different types of penguins and practised our sketching techniques. In the afternoon we had lots of fun learning our penguin dance. Look at us in our lovely costumes!
What a fantastic day Year 2 had! Look at all of our wonderful costumes. We are enjoying learning about The Enormous Crocodile and had great fun freeze framing different parts of the story.
