We are learning to read!

All children now have a new Oxford Reading Book in their book folder. These guided reading books are changed on the same day once a week and will have been shared at school before they are sent home. As your child learns the words in their Word Wallet, they will be ready to move up through the different stages of books.

Watch out for stickers in the Homework Dairies to tell you the reading strategy to practise when moving up to a new stage!

Most children will have a discussion book without words. When sharing these books at home it is important that your child tells the story through the pictures, no story is wrong! Talk about the front cover, title, author and illustrator and practise turning the pages and finding page numbers. Encourage discussion about what is happening in the pictures to tell the story, decide what people could be saying and predict what might happen next. At the end of reading the story, you could talk about what you liked or disliked about the story and whether it reminded you of anything that has happened in your own experience. There are also ideas on the inside of the cover too!

‘Read to Me’ books or colour stickered book band books can still be changed as often as children read them at home and you record them in the Diaries. We will soon be starting Library change so there will be a book for you to share together and there may be as many as three books in the book bags at any one time!

Enjoy watching your child learn to read with you!
